The grooviest ghoulies in punk were back last night with L.A.βs finest Starcrawler and Brooklyn-born Surfbort at Oaklandβs beautiful Starline Social Club for the βDumb Bitch Tour 2021β. It was spooky Halloween vibes in full effect once the music ripped with these two blasting the crowdβs faces off. Surfbort, named after a misread Beyonce lyric in βDrunk In Loveβ, is absolutely tongue-in-cheek party punk, with singer Dani Miller, giving her devil-may-care smirk to the crowd with politically-wiseass-a-la-Black Flagg songs like βKilled By Foodβ or Bad Brains-inspired βWhite Claw Enema Bong Hitβ.
Starcrawler is something else with a deep throbbing groove that has evolved into something akin to Black Sabbath, Hole and more recently, jangly country. Itβs always a mixed bag with these titans of the SoCal rock scene, fronted my leading woman Arrow De Wilde, whose wild witchy demeanor transfixes everyone she lays eyes on. Previously covering Starcrawler in 2019, theyβve grown as a band musically, forging ahead with promoting their album Devour You, which did not get toured widely due to Covid.
