ESCAPE-ISM
The man, the myth, the Psychic Soviet, Ian Svenonious and the lovely Sandi Denton are Escape-ism: a power-duo subversion of the rock βnβ roll band, and a protest against the lack of protesters. Svenonius has had his thrills before with The Make-Up (check out their 2019 reunion tour coverage here), as well as Chain & The Gang, but Escape-ism is his most recent iteration of the contemporary literary rebel outlaw, which is as lo-fi as Link Wray or Suicide, with a post-punk political bent Γ‘ la Wire or Gang Of Four, mixed with a little well-heeled Stooges frisson. Laying down pelvic-floor groove tracks like βBlack Goldβ (which according to Svenonius is the, ββ¦First song protesting electric carsβ) or the anti-toxic masculinity screed, βBorn With A Womanβs Intuitionβ, or the titrated-pure anti-establishmentarian, βRome Wasnβt Burned In A Dayβ, Svenonius is the svengali of the post-nostalgic underground intelligentsiaβ¦plus those matching crimson suits are the sempiternal βfit. Re-releasing their 2020 album The Lost Record at Kilowatt, Escape-ism is something to ponder over and dance to, days and weeks after the show.
Pink Stiletto
Ultra New Wave alien Valery Kvochkova and her assemblage of disco-freaks (featuring Kyle Borodkin, Denis Victorov and Gus Alexander) were back for their finale as Pink Stiletto-the-band, as Kvochkova continues Pink Stiletto as a solo act. After her release this May of her debut EP New Wava, three of those tracks were re-released and included in a Metro Subterranean Compilation album in July by Hyperspace Communications (run by Los Microwavesβ David Javelosa), clearing the way for a forthcoming Pink Stiletto LP.
Kvochkova, for her part, is steadily climbing her way into the troposphere of Italo-disco, nu-disco and synth-pop goddesses, playing unreleased and club-ready tracks βNeonβ and βNight Shadowβ at Kilowatt. Pink Stiletto is ready to pull you onto the dance floor with atomic force, and it wonβt be long before the festivals (Iβm looking at you, Substance) start calling. Stay tuned for more from this ascendent icon in a platinum beehive.
Kontrol Inc.
L.A.βs favorite post-punk band was back to help open the show with their kinetic throb-and-danceβplus any time you get to hear a saw being played, you know youβre in for a good time. If you get a chance to check them out in SoCal, please do. Also, these are color pictures: the band lives in grayscale, which is also pretty cool.
