WAXAHATCHEE :: GOOD MORNING

May 10, 2024

Moody Amphitheater, Austin TX

Shot & Written by Grace Davis

Katie Crutchfield, aka Waxahatchee, fit right in the other night in Austin, Texas.  With her folk feel and lyrical genius, her and her phenomenal backing band supported her impeccable vocals.  The music itself ranges from soft, introspective ballads to more upbeat, rock-oriented tracks, ensuring a dynamic and emotionally varied show.  Her performance was raw and emotive, capturing the essence of her recordings.  She was very warm and as welcoming to her audience as they were to her.  After her first song, β€œ3 Sisters”, she hopped off stage to hand a fan her hat.  Crutchfield’s stage presence is both captivating and personable, often engaging with the audience between songs, creating a sense of connection.  The setlist included a mix of tracks from across her discography, ranging from the confessional and stripped-down songs of her early albums (closing the night with her 2020 release β€œFire” and a cover of Lucinda Williams’ β€œI Lost It”) to the more full-band, indie rock arrangements of her recent work (see: β€œEvil Spawn” and β€œIce Cold”).  It also featured covers of the songs β€œProblem With It”, β€œLine of Sight”, and β€œHurricane" by Plains (Crutchfield’s second band with Jess Williamson).  Overall, the Waxahatchee concert was a compelling blend of heartfelt lyrics, strong vocal performances, and a mixture of musical styles that kept the audience deeply engaged throughout the show.  For those who appreciate indie folk with a nice twang, and rock with a deeply personal touch, attending a Waxahatchee concert is a memorable and enriching experience and one you can’t miss.  Check out her latest release Tigers Blood

Good Morning

Good Morning traveled to Austin to open the Moody Center for Waxahatchee.  Good Morning is an indie rock band from Melbourne, Australia, known for their lo-fi guitar sound and laid-back vocal delivery.  The band was formed by Stefan Blair and Liam Parsons, who have been friends since high school.  Their music features thoughtful lyrics, simple yet catchy melodies, and a lo-fi DIY production feel.  The band’s live performance was intimate and had a mellow vibe, often creating a cozy atmosphere that resonated well with the audience.  They wrapped up their set by performing one of their best known songs, β€œ$10”.  Be sure to check out their latest album, Good Morning Seven.
