Peaches w/ Lil Mariko (5/20/22)
The Teaches Of Peaches
20th Anniversary Tour
The Masonic San Francisco
Itβs 2002: You are just learning where Afghanistan is on a map. Rudy Guliani is a hero. You like Tobey Maguire as Spider Man. And youβre a little sad that Felicity just had its series finale. But from out of the blue, your local Tower Records (or in my case, Amoeba Records) has a new album out, The Teaches Of Peaches, by a woman named Peaches (born Merrill Nisker). The album cover is both frightening and alluring. Youβre not sure if this was written for you, but know, deep down, it was. From wire to wire, this album is everything you needed, but didn't know you did. The Scenester Revolution is here, and itβs our only hope. I mean, for Christβs sakes, the opening song is entitled βFuck The Pain Awayβ and it only gets raunchier and more debaucherous from there.
20 years later, youβre still mad at your parents. Two decades seem like a blur. Where are the flying cars? The jet packs? Itβs good to see Tobey Maguire again, but stillβ¦maybe itβs time to give TTOP a listen again. Cue: Peaches triumphant return.
Along with opener Lil Mariko, was everything we needed in a showβdrag queens, vagina hats, titty jackets, hairy denim jackets, hairy bush and a cavalcade of songs from both the infamous album, as well as subsequent albums. No stone was left unturned, from βSet It Offβ and βDiddle My Skittleβ to βShake Yer Dixβ, closing out with βOperateβ and βDick In The Airβ. If you can, check her out at the Just Like Heaven Festival this weekend or on Sunday in San Diego before she heads to Europe. Youβll still be mad at your parents, but at least, you can shake your ass at them.
Lil Mariko
Lil Mariko (born Katherine Mariko Zhang) has been described as a Gen-Z βMeme Queenβ, but this Instagram and TikTok rapper/songwriter got the party started with her Cardi B-meets-Pussycat Dolls-meets-Atreyu hyper-pop set. All her songs are ready to be blasted on AirPods and screamed aloud. Follow her here.
