Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, the Coloradan Gregory Alan Isakov is now a staple in the indie-folk scene including a Grammy nomination in 2020 for Best Folk Album (Evening Machines), and now his 2023 album, Appaloosa Bones (also the name of the tour). A multi-instrumental virtuoso on several instruments, but especially the banjo and ukulele, as well as a horticulturalist on his plot of land in Boulder, Isakov is helping usher in a new era of indie folk, using what he calls, β€œGod noises”—or acoustic folk instrumentationβ€”for a younger audience.

Opening the night with his song, β€œBefore the Sun”, Isakov enchanted the Moody Theater with his haunting vocals and intricate guitar work. Backed by a talented ensemble (Jeb Bows on violin, Steve Varney on banjo/guitar/piano, Max Barcelow on drums, John Paul Grigsby on bass, Danny Black on guitar/keys/steel), Isakov’s songs hit the hearts of everyone in the room. Sharing the stage equally with his band members, it’s obvious that Isakov has a true appreciation for the lush instrumentals they provide him. Highlights of the night included a soul-shaking rendition of fan favorite, β€œIf I Go, I’m Going” (joined by Leif Vollebekk), along with many intimate moments of uplifting and unifying arrangements. Isakov’s storytelling via songwriting deepens the connection with his audience, leaving a lasting impression of his authenticity and true musical wisdom.

Leif Vollebekk

Leif Vollebekk is a Canadian indie folk singer-songwriter. His 2017 album Twin Solitude was a shortlisted finalist for the 2017 Polaris Music Prize (the Canadian award for best full-length album) and the 2018 Juno Award (the Canadian Grammys) for Adult Alternative Album of the Year. Vollebekk opened everyone’s ears with music full of soul, while still adhering to Isakov’s folk feel. Despite being a well-traveled Canadian, Vollebekk noted numerous times how much he loves Austin and that he’s looking forward to having a day to enjoy the city the following morning.
