The Strumbellas :: Certainy So
April 12, 2024
The Historic Scoot Inn, Austin TX
Shot and written by Grace Davis
From Canada, The Strumbellas made their way to Austin for the first time in five years for a night full of feel-good folk pop. On their Part Time Believer Tour they brought out Dave Ritter (keys), Jon Hembrey (guitar), Isabel Ritchie (violin), Darryl James (bass), Miles Gibson (drums), and Jimmy Chauveau (vocals). Their show was marked by engaging, sing-along choruses and a communal feel that reflects their folksy roots. About halfway through the show, Chauveau told the crowd that their last album Part Time Believer discussed the struggle of not always believing in your life's outlook and about personal struggles. Putting their beliefs into action, they have been putting up a box at their merch stand before each show, asking attendees to write down what keeps them believing in life. Chauveau then took a moment during their set to read a few submissions. One was from a couple whom had been together for 24 years. The note described that it was their resilient love which was their reason to keep believing in life. Another was from an 11 year-old girl stating that this was her first concert and she is “young and wild” (in reference to their song). Nearing the end of the night, they covered “All These Things That I've Done” by The Killers, uniting everyone in the crowd. The band made sure to interact with the crowd, as well as each other, cracking jokes and laughing together between songs. To wrap it up, they played their hit “Spirits” (currently at 121 million views on Youtube) and it seemed as if everybody in the venue was singing and dancing with all they had.
Certainly So
Just before dark, the crowd welcomed in Certainly So from Nashville, Tennessee. The band is made up of members, Tanner Gray (guitar), Chase Porter (bass), Colby Wilson (guitar), and Zach Corder (drums). Touring with them on keys is Diego Urias. New on the scene, their first album, Future Self Only Dreams was released in 2021 to great acclaim. They played all three songs off of their new EP 1422, which had come out that same day. Their music has a very free, coastal, relaxing feel perfect for this coming spring and summer.
